XM Extension Publishing

Overview

This guide outlines the process to showcase your XM technology expertise as a Qualtrics Partner building on the Qualtrics Extension SDK (Software Development Kit) through the Qualtrics Developer Platform (QDP), and drive broad distribution of your investment through the XM Marketplace.

After reviewing this guide you should have a high-level understanding of the requirements and process for listing a public extension on the XM Marketplace. If you are looking to share a private extension with a brand without listing on the XM Marketplace, please see our documentation on Managing XM Extension Teams and Sharing.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with this guide, we recommend that you first go through the XM Extension SDK Overview.

Depending on your goals, each step of the publishing process has different pre-requisites. Please visit the individual pages for more information.

What

XM Extensions are bundled into two categories: private or public. Publishing your XM Extension gets your functionality into the hands of customers.

Private Extensions

Private XM Extensions are designed to be bespoke to a customer or a small set of customers and cannot be listed on the Qualtrics XM Marketplace. Therefore, private XM Extensions do not need to be certified prior to delivery to a client.

If your objective is to enable a private extension for your client, please see our documentation on Managing XM Extension Teams and Sharing.

Public Extensions

Public XM Extensions are designed to be broadly distributed to customers and are typically listed on the XM Marketplace to enable public self-serve discovery.

Prior to XM Marketplace listing, all public XM Extensions must be certified by the Qualtrics certification team and pass all certification criteria.

Note that it is possible to convert a private XM Extension to a public one by passing certification and completing the remainder of the necessary requirements.

Why

Publishing and subsequently listing on the XM Marketplace enables you to showcase your XM technology expertise as a Qualtrics partner. Qualtrics partners are in a unique position to understand customer needs and solve them at a large scale.

Who

Extension Business Owners

Owners in product management, partnerships, or business development interested in the XM Marketplace listing process will find this documentation relevant. There are portions where cross-team collaboration will be necessary to proceed to the next step.

Extension Creators

The primary creators and maintainers of XM Extensions are developers.

Some of this documentation, especially the more technical portions, is written for people with either development or strong technical experience.

Extension Consumers

Qualtrics customers are the exclusive consumers of XM Extensions.

Relevant documentation for them is provided by XM Extension developers and is scoped to their Extension, related Qualtrics features, and any corresponding external system functionality.

When

The preparation process for publishing can start at any time. If the end goal is to list on the XM Marketplace, we recommend understanding the process early in the development lifecycle.

How

In general, the process to publish a public XM Extension is as follows:

  1. Plan
  2. Build
  3. License
  4. Certify
  5. Publish
  6. List
  7. Enable

1. Plan

XM Extension publishing involves a number of stages, with different requirements along the way. Therefore, we strongly suggest you review the entire process prior to beginning development as each step may require cross-team collaboration.

Many parts of the overall process can be completed in parallel, such as creating a Terms of Service Policy 5.1, Privacy Policy Policy 5.2, Marketplace listing assets, or determining commercial terms. Being aware and prepared for each step will help expedite the process.

2. Build

XM Extensions are built by developers using the XM Extension SDK. During the build phase, developers will work on extension functionality. By the end of this phase, you should have a working extension version ready for customers submitted.

3. License

XM Extensions must have an associated commercial model. During the license phase, you will determine the commercial model for your XM Extension which you will provide the details during the certification phase.

4. Certify

XM Extensions must pass certification in order to be listed on the XM Marketplace. During this phase, you will submit your XM Extension to our team for certification against our policies.

5. Publish

XM Extensions can be published once certified. Once certification is complete, your extension version can be broadly published, or released, to customers. During this phase, you will choose a version to publish. This could be new versions or existing versions you wish to roll back to.

6. List

XM Extensions can be listed on the XM Marketplace. During this phase, you will create XM Marketplace assets for our teams to review and ultimately publish to your XM Marketplace listing.

7. Enable

XM Extensions need to be enabled on a brand in order for customers to install and use them. During this phase, you will choose which customers have access to your extension through the enablement section of the publishing portal.
