XM Plugins Overview

XM Plugins and XM Extensions

XM Plugins have code, configurations, and UX that is bundled together and run within a Qualtrics product that enable users to interact and use it. You create XM Plugins to either connect/integrate Qualtrics with an external system or extend existing Qualtrics functionality in custom ways.

XM Extensions act as containers for one or more XM Plugins. The Extension SDK enables you to create a container XM Extension and then as many custom XM Plugins as you wish.

These are the 8 types of Plugins that are currently available for development:

Plugin TypeStatusDescriptionExample
Workflows TaskGenerally Available (GA)Build a custom task which is triggered by a specific event. The most common event to trigger a new task is a survey submission.Your website has a survey available for customers to report on their experience with your product. Once this survey is submitted, you'd like to use part of the submission information to offer a promo code specific to the customer. To do so, you can build a custom Workflows Task which is triggered by that feedback survey submission.
Workflows EventGABuild a custom event that initiates Qualtrics workflows containing Tasks.Your website has a button which customers can click to receive a statistical report about your product. You would also like to send the customer a feedback survey about that report. To do so, you can develop the same button to act as an Workflows Event, so that it can be used to seamlessly trigger a task on the Qualtrics platform that sends out the follow-up survey.
Reporting WidgetGACreate a custom widget that uniquely visualizes data in CX DashboardsYou have a Dashboard which collects information on both customer satisfaction and customer retention rates, but it doesn't conflate these data points into a single chart. You want to build a reporting widget that does just that.
Embed InsightGADrop Qualtrics dashboards and widgets into other platforms. You want to view a Qualtrics visualization showing customer satisfaction within your own customer management system.
Survey QuestionEarly Access (EA)Enhance engagement, style, and creativity of surveys with questions that have custom interaction or unique look and feel. You have a survey question about your customers' favorite pizza toppings. Instead of asking them to click check boxes next to topping names, you could allow them to drag and drop images of pizza toppings onto a plain cheese pizza. The possibilities are endless.
XM SolutionEAEnable customers to implement custom methodology natively on Qualtrics. You have proprietary survey design methodology that increases CSAT response rates, and you want to package it up and market it to Qualtrics users.
