Developer Accounts
In this guide you will learn what a developer account is and how it differs from a standard Qualtrics account
Prerequisites
Before continuing with this guide we recommend you review and complete:
What is a developer account?
Qualtrics implements a specialized account type for the creation and distribution of XM Extensions. This type of account is referred to as a Developer Account. Developer Accounts are given a completely different set of capabilities from standard Qualtrics users which, in turn, protect both.
When should I use a developer account?
Developer Accounts are unique to the Qualtrics Developer Platform, so they cannot be used to access features like surveys, directories and dashboards.
Instead, the functionality of these accounts focuses on XM Extensions, Teams, Shares and Publishing. Any time you need to create, modify or distribute an XM Extension, you will need to use a Developer Account.
Do I need to be a developer in order to create a developer account?
No, although you will need to accept the Developer Terms and Conditions before you can use any features unique to Developer Accounts.
How do I access my developer account?
Your developer account can be accessed from two different locations:
- The Qualtrics Developer Portal
- The XMT CLI
Both of these access points require that you already have an existing standard Qualtrics account.
At this time, developer accounts can only be provisioned from an existing standard Qualtrics account, there is no self-service way to provision a developer account.
Developer Portal access
To gain access from the Qualtrics Developer Portal, simply navigate to the Developer Portal and login with your existing Qualtrics account. If it is your first time logging in, then you'll review and accept the terms and conditions to activate your developer account.
XMT access
To login from XMT run the xmt init command from the shell. This will open a browser window to login. Complete the login with your existing Qualtrics account and accept the terms and conditions in order to activate your developer account.
Why do I need an existing Qualtrics account in order to create a developer account?
Developer accounts are partitioned from standard Qualtrics accounts, but they are allowed to reference each other. This capability is important when it comes to sharing XM Extensions.
In most cases, XM Extensions cannot be shared to a brand that the associated developer does not have access to. This stipulation prevents inappropriate access requests from developers to brands that they have no connection with.
Can all types of Qualtrics accounts be used to provision developer accounts?
No. Certain types of Qualtrics accounts are prevented from provisioning developer accounts. Generally, account types that are not intended for Qualtrics users, such as participants, are prevented from creating developer accounts associated with that brand.
Are there different types of developer accounts?
No, all Qualtrics developer accounts use the same type. However, there may be different capabilities and levels of access depending on a developer's relationship with Qualtrics.
For example, only partners who have completed an agreement with Qualtrics can publish their extensions for large-scale distribution.
